Leopard - Panthera pardus

Leopard

Leopard – photographed at the Bannerghatta National Park, Bangalore

The leopard, Panthera pardus, is the smallest of the four "big cats" in the genus Panthera, the other three being the tiger, lion and jaguar. Once distributed across southern Asia and Africa, from Korea to South Africa, the leopard's range of distribution has decreased radically because of hunting and loss of habitat. One still comes across stray sightings even now, especially in areas fringing forests and national parks or biosphere reserves, mainly because human encroachment is forever invading what was once exclusive habitat of wild animals and animals are forced to venture out of their natural habitat, usually to prey on cattle and sheep as they come across as easier prey, leading to a lot of resentment among farmers and migrant grazers.

One does wish that we are able to reverse this loss of habitat and give back the forests to these wonderful animals, that are so graceful. One also wishes to see these beautiful animals in the wild and see the spark of freedom in their eyes…..

Memorial…

It was this evening that I received the news that an old classmate was no more. Like petals blown away by the breeze, another life is extinguished.

Riki Krishnan, we will miss you.

May your soul rest in peace.

Friends…..

Friends for life

Everyone needs friends….

While visiting a friends house for dinner, we noticed that their dog was listless and looking sick and were told that it was not keeping too well. A little while later, we saw the friends daughter petting the dog and putting it to sleep, and realised that everyone needed a friend, especially when one was down….

Born Free….

_MG_8029During a recent visit to a park I noticed a lovely phenomenon,  the emergence of seeds from a seed pod.

During the space of an hour,_MG_8086 I saw the pod release its whole set of seeds. They emerged one by one and after emerging, became fluffy and flew away….

Footsteps….

_MG_7521

Lonely are the footsteps one takes on the sands of time….

sometimes one encounters friends in the form of little flowers, but most of life is spent walking on the dry, desert sand of loneliness… sometimes the feet are bereft of even the company of our sandals, as even they are left behind in our haste.

Flower -2In such a situation, one should take time, STOP and smell the flowers,  and realise that there is more to life than walking its dreary paths.

Pele-conferencing

Pelicans

It is not only humans who suffer from the modern ritual of conferences. Even birds, in this case Pelicans do hold conferences from time to time…
